Welcome to AliasVault 0.31.0 🎉

After four months of continued development, the long-awaited major vault data model update is now finally available! A range of new features and improvements have been added, while also additional preparation has been done for many more future enhancements.

Firstly, this release brings much faster vault synchronization, improved reliability and security, and additionally we have completely rebuilt the web app in React, replacing the old Blazor WebAssembly app. The new web app is much faster in everyday use and the upfront asset download has been reduced from 40MB to under 3MB, while keeping all features and the familiar design.

Secondly, the new vault architecture adds technical support for sharing vaults with family members. The core mechanisms (which are 90% of the work) are now built into version 0.31.0, however the feature isn’t generally available yet: we still need to finalize the interfaces and family sharing permissions model. Over the next couple of weeks, we do plan to start a closed beta on the AliasVault Cloud and test vault sharing with a small group of users. Stay tuned!

🚨 Important Note: Version 0.31.0 introduces a new vault format. Once an app running AliasVault version 0.31.0 or later upgrades your vault, all your other devices must also run AliasVault version 0.31.0 or later.

Self-hosting AliasVault? Update your server to version 0.31.0 before using apps running AliasVault version 0.31.0 or later. These new apps require the V2 API, which is only available starting with server version 0.31.0.

A faster, rebuilt web app

We've completely rebuilt the AliasVault web app, re-using the same core components that already powered the browser extension.

The result is a faster experience in everyday use, with a much smaller initial download. When you're opening your vault, browsing items or editing credentials, the web app should feel more responsive in all areas. We've kept the design primarily the same on purpose, with some quality of life improvements in certain areas, most noticable the settings UI.

Behind the scenes, we've now also refactored all client apps to share as much logic as possible through our internal Rust core and shared client component library. This reduces duplication, makes the code easier to maintain, and helps us bring future improvements to all apps more consistently and quickly.

Faster vault synchronization

We've rebuilt the vault architecture and introduced a new V2 API to make synchronization much faster and more reliable, with additional improvements to vault security.

This is new V2 API is also the base for the upcoming family vault sharing feature. We will share more soon about a closed beta that will take place on the cloud environment, allowing interested users to help us test family sharing in practice while we finalize work on the permissions model and management interfaces. More on this later.

Everyday improvements

Alongside the larger changes, this release includes several improvements across the apps:

  • Custom item icons: either use the website's official icon (if available), or choose custom icons for your credentials to make them easier to recognize.
  • A more consistent interface: Better-organized settings across all apps, improved modal popups clarity, and more.
  • Password character exclusions: specify characters you want the password generator to leave out, e.g. characters that are hard to manually type.
  • Improved two-factor authentication: AliasVault now supports SHA256-based authenticator codes (on top of existing SHA1), and better autofill for 2FA codes entered into separate digit fields.
  • Updated browser extension feature-parity: The browser extension now allows you to change your master password, view security logs and delete your account. The other apps already supported this, but this now brings feature parity to all apps.
  • Korean language support: Korean translations are now available in all apps.

We've also included numerous other fixes and smaller refinements that have been reported by our community. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!

Self-hosting improvements

Self-hosted administrators can now invite new users while keeping public registration disabled. This makes it easier to give friends or family access without opening registration to everyone.

This release also includes updates to the admin UI dashboard and other smaller parts of the self-hosting experience.

Try it now

Now is a perfect time to try out AliasVault if you haven't already. Sign up for free on the web app, and grab the browser extension and mobile app to get started. Prefer to self-host AliasVault? That's also possible! See the installation docs for Docker and install script options. Read up on our mission and roadmap to see what AliasVault will get next.
